Jean Kamba

Jean Kamba lives and works in Kinshasa. He holds a Masters in Information and Communication Sciences from the National Pedagogical University of Kinshasa (UPN) and the Faculty of Human Sciences.

He works as a writer, poet, journalist and art critic and is a research assistant at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa. In addition, he organizes independent exhibitions and has been working together with other artists in Kinshasa as a consultant and mediator since 2006. At the invitation of the Goethe-Institut Kinshasa, Jean Kamba visited the documenta in Kassel and Athens in 2017. In the same year took part in an artists’ residency for research on the collection of popular painting in the Central Africa Museum (Tervuren) in Brussels.

In 2018 he participated in the internationally acclaimed collective exhibition “Congo Stars”, which was shown at the Kunsthaus in Graz and the Kunsthalle Tübingen. That year he also worked in the production team for a fanzine as part of an exhibition of the German artist Wolfgang Tillmans at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kinshasa. In 2019 Jean Kamba was involved in “Laboratoire Kontempo”, an experimental project of urban interventions in Kinshasa, organized by the duo Mukenge/Schellhammer.  Also in 2019, he received an invitation to Berlin for the symposium “Spinning Triangles”, initiated by the art centre SAVVY Contemporary on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus.
